Bike Atop Lucca’s Fortified Wall As You Take In The Views Of The Tuscan Hills.
Although there are many fortified towns in Tuscany, none compare to the beauty and coolness of Lucca. Set in the Apuan Alps, Lucca’s charm is its unique fortified wall that has remained intact and forms a somewhat perfect ring around the town. At an empowering and towering height, the defensive wall, though never used for military purposes, has been repurposed as a public promenade. A shared bike, walk path and running track, this tree lined wall offers shade from the hot Tuscan sun which is ideal for a casual 4km bike ride. What better way to see a panoramic view of Lucca then from a birds eye upon the Renaissance Wall.
Renting a bike is easy and fast as there are numerous bike rental companies scattered through town. I recommend Cicli Bizzarri on the opposite end of town, a 20-minute walk from the train station. Not only is it €1 cheaper per hour than other shops, I preferred their location as I could enjoy a walk through town before the bike ride, then lunch and shop afterward. There is a rental company outside the train station, but as you will not need the bike for more than an hour, it is silly to have to exit the walled town to return the bike then head back into town to walk around. Requires too much effort in the blistering summer heat. Trust me!
*After your bike ride enjoy lunch at Vecchia Trattoria Buralli, a casual eatery on a quiet street away from the main bustle of town. The pasta is homemade, the sauces are rich and the service is warm and inviting.*
